Brave new World

The exhibition "Brave new World – On the Transformation of Central and Eastern European Cities" is part of the project STADTanSICHTEN/ CITYVIEWS, which the ifa-galleries Berlin and Stuttgart have been designing and carrying out since 1993. After the last projects presenting cities in Asia and Africa, "Brave New World" focuses on the development in the European region. At the same time, a change of perspective occurs: in contrast to the explosion of population in megacities like Kairo, Istanbul or Lagos, European cities are characterized by shrinking processes, especially in Central and Eastern Europe, but also in the Eastern German cities. The related negative consequences have already been discussed in detail. The exhibition "Brave New World" opposes this point of view and shows examples of creative re-use, artistic conversion and social re-dedication of former socialist cities, which now have to meet the requirements of the 21st century and its economical, political and social changes. The projects are various examples of urban planning, architectural and sociological transformations: they have to be pursued in a similar way in the entire region and occurred just because of the specific conditions featuring Central and Eastern Europe. "Brave New World" shows that there are creative re-uses and conversions worth appreciating.

Works in Progress, Skopje

Kokan Grchev and Kornelija Koneska  have developed the project "Works in Progress…",  Works in Progress project, initiates different levels of approach to the problem of continuity, tradition, and especially pointing to the lack of possibilities for “reading” the internal structure of different traditions in a condition of globalised and changed cultural surrounding in the contemporary Macedonian society. Theoretical and Architectural space concept of the project (Kokan Grcev) concerned about the meaningless of the real values of traditional architectural history nowadays , is conceptualized according to the sensitive and extremely intimate artistic expression (video installation prepared by Kornelija Koneska and Jovan Balov). Their common decision to use architecture as an artistic and complex phenomena that deserve special kind of interest, introduces multidisciplinary approach, practiced to get a result that creates specific intersection through the living body of the “living” and quite new architecture production created in progress, as a sign of the “brave new world…”
In this process, authors use architecture as artistic, sociological, “multileveled” phenomena; more precisely, they treat the confirmed contrast between the traditional values and contemporary architectural expression as a chance to practice epistemological reinvestigation of the existing architectural reality, in the quest for the sensitivity of the 21 century citizen. This project, is trying to point to the possible level on which the architecture could make “pressure“ to the general overview, through critical and previously observed  processes deriving from the “internal” structure of the existing society conditions.

Architects Minas Bakalchev and Mitko Hadzi-Pulja  participated in the project trying to
display the development of an idea of “derived architectural substances” presented through selected drawings of singular and pre-defined elements. At the same time, the openness of their concept, continue the discussion with the rest of the installation, pointing to the elements of "architectural anarchy" being elements of “different order” at the same time...
